TAMU-CC LIBRARY STAIRWELL MURAL
OVERVIEW:
The 2022-2023 Graphic Design Association, led by Nancy Miller and Joshua Duttweiler, partnered with the Library to convert a largely unused stairwell into a must-see experience. We were given the opportunity to come up with our creative idea to re-imagine the space with almost no restrictions on concept or financials. The students wanted to create something that took you on a journey as you climbed the stairs, and that evolved into the final mural.
SOLUTION:
The colorful mural features an underwater theme starting underwater to the beach to the end where we conclude with graduation. The mural concept was created to both represent campus life, but also give a metaphor to students using the stairs to graduation. Elements in the mural include sharks, fish, and scuba divers along with Islander traditions such as the class ring, Momentum wave, Hector P. Garcia statue, palm trees, cats, and more. The pinnacle of the installation is a graduation scene, complete with the iconic Islander lei. Photo opportunities come to life when visitors follow the Bell Library @tamucclibrary on Instagram and select from three photo filters in the space which will activate a shark bite, a scuba mask experience, and an Alumni Forever filter frame.
